A Guest Bedroom with Mediterranean Ease
THE STORY BEHIND THE SPACE
That was the brief for this guest bedroom. Not a literal interpretation — no terracotta, no arches, no obvious coastal references. Just that quality of warmth and ease that the Mediterranean does so naturally. A room that feels unhurried. Sun-drenched even on a cloudy day.
“Mediterranean design isn’t about a look. It’s about a feeling — the kind that comes from spending time in a place where the light is soft, the walls have texture, and every room feels like it was made for living slowly.”
THE DESIGN DIRECTION
Getting there, in a Charleston home, meant working with light, texture, and layering — and knowing exactly where to bring in pattern and where to let the room breathe.
The wall treatment is where this room finds its character. Beadboard paneling runs the lower half — crisp, architectural, quietly classic. Above it, a soft botanical wallpaper in cream and sage takes over. Delicate leaf motifs, barely-there color, a pattern that feels hand-drawn rather than printed. The combination is what gives the room its soul. The beadboard brings structure and a nod to traditional craftsmanship. The wallpaper brings warmth, softness, and just enough pattern to make the room feel layered without ever feeling busy. Together they create that textured, sun-washed quality that is the essence of Mediterranean living — without a single obvious reference to it.
The cane bed frame is the natural anchor of the space. Warm oak and woven rattan — two materials that have been beloved in Mediterranean homes for generations because they age beautifully and feel inherently relaxed. The bedding layers in the same spirit: soft linen in warm white and muted sage, nothing too crisp, nothing too perfect. The kind of bed you want to sink into and stay.
A brass dome table lamp on each side — warm, rounded, the kind of light that glows rather than illuminates. A window seat nook tucked into the corner with a blue accent pillow, a small armchair in soft sage, a gallery of warm-toned art simply framed above. Every element earns its place, and nothing competes for attention.
This is what Mediterranean-inspired design looks like when it's translated thoughtfully — not borrowed wholesale, but distilled into feeling. Warmth, texture, light, and a room that invites you to slow down the moment you step inside.
